Transdermal Magnesium Against Lifestyle Diseases
One of the most vital mineral for our body is
Magnesium. This mineral is in charge of many metabolic bodily processes such as
DNA and RNA synthesis, protein synthesis, regulation of glucose levels,
reproduction, control of blood pressure, neurotransmission, and many enzymatic
processes that is happening all at once inside our bodies. Due to its many
functions and factors that it affects in our metabolic processes, its minimal
presence and/or absence in the bloodstream and cells gives rise to a number of
diseases. Most of these diseases can have several complications and can even
cause death if not detected and treated right away.
The onset of processed foods in the diet of the
population in the past decade, especially in the Western countries, has greatly
affected the amount of magnesium in their food intake. Most of these processed
foods, about 80-90 percent, have eliminated magnesium in their list of food
minerals incorporated to their products. People with this lifestyle in the
Western countries have acquired diseases such as diabetes, obesity, heart
diseases, colon cancer, and even stroke. Unfortunately, this problem isn’t just
happening in the Western world because even the poorer countries in Asia and
other continents have the same lifestyle problems which limit magnesium intake.
Now since people have known the facts of magnesium’s
importance in combating and preventing these acquired lifestyle diseases,
scientists and researchers have developed several magnesium-rich medicines and
supplements to answer its market demands. The most used clinical medicine is
the oral magnesium supplementation which is said to have increased magnesium
levels in the blood after 4-12 months of usage. Recently, there was a topical
magnesium solution that was introduced into the market. It is said to increase
magnesium levels in the blood and cells within 4-6 weeks of constant use. This
topical magnesium solution is called TransdermalMagnesium.
Transdermal Magnesium is said to be the most
efficient, most effective, and most cost-efficient method to increase blood and
cellular magnesium levels. Unlike oral magnesium supplements, Transdermal
Magnesium doesn’t have to be ingested and therefore doesn’t have to pass by the
gastrointestinal tract which can cause side effects such as stomach upset and
pain, diarrhea and constipation, and even nausea and vomiting.
Transdermal Magnesium comes with ease of use for it
is just applied as a topical solution or a foot soak with certain water
dilutions. The target point of entry for Transdermal Magnesium is the skin
which is the biggest organ of the body- about 2 square meters in size and 8
pounds in weight. Its method of absorption, however, is not well supported by
research. Since the skin acts as a barrier of the body from the outside
environment, it also most likely acts as a barrier to Transdermal Magnesium as
well. There is no active cell in the surface of the skin because it is mostly
composed of dead cells- hence no active magnesium transporters present. One
study, however, showed the possibility of magnesium absorption through the
small area of sweat glands and hair follicles. This study suggested that in
certain concentrations of magnesium ions, they can penetrate the stratum
corneum of the skin.
